Fortification Hauenstein
In the Hauenstein region, a Jura landscape with rugged charm, you can still find traces of the impressive Fortification Hauenstein from the First World War (1914-1918). It is set in one of Switzerland's most beautiful hiking areas, (with Langenbruck serving as an ideal starting point).
The chain of defensive structures extends nearly 50 kilometres, forming a semicircle up to 1,100 metres above sea level around the railway town of Olten. Much of this lies within the Baselland region. These fortifications were one of the most crucial defensive lines of the Swiss Army between 1914 and 1918. Approximately five hundred military underground and above-ground structures were constructed for the Fortification Hauenstein, designed for a garrison of 45,000 soldiers and 6,500 horses.
