Burgruine Schloss Birseck
The Birseck. Once the seat of the Basel bishops, today a romantic gem.
Built in 1243 by Prince-Bishop Lüthold II, damaged by an earthquake in 1365, expanded into a Baroque castle by later owners, destroyed during the revolution in 1793 - what a story. But only 15 years later the remains were incorporated into the landscape garden of the Ermitage as „romantic ruins“. Fortunately!
Please note: The ruins of Birseck Castle are open for viewing from Easter to October 31 every Wednesday and Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm. Otherwise, the castle ruins can only be admired from the outside.
