Arlesheim Region

Close to the city, in the district of Arlesheim, the valleys are wider and the hills gentler than elsewhere in the Basel region. There are various sporting and cultural activities on offer here: you will find interesting museums as well as unique architectural landmarks, such as the Arlesheim Dom (cathedral), the only ‘Dom’ cathedral in the country. But you can also discover nature in the most populous district of the Basel region, such as the Merian Gardens and the Park im Grünen in Münchenstein or the largest English landscape garden in Switzerland, the Ermitage near Arlesheim.

The Swiss Heritage Society has awarded the Birsstadt association (a union of the municipalities of Aesch, Arlesheim, Birsfelden, Dornach, Duggingen, Grellingen, Muttenz, Münchenstein, Pfeffingen, and Reinach) the Wakker Prize 2024.

Since 2024, Arlesheim has been officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. The municipal capital of Lower Baselland has been honoured with the "Best Swiss Villages" title by "Die schönsten Schweizer Dörfer" (The Most Beautiful Swiss Villages).
