Guest Tax and Guest Pass+

All guests from outside the canton are subject to guest tax and receive a Guest Pass+ for the duration of their stay. Accommodation providers need to register with Baselland Tourism.

How to Register:

  • Register with Baselland Tourism: This is necessary to issue the Guest Pass+ and to handle guest tax payments (unless using Airbnb).
  • Send us your details: Email your accommodation address and your contact information to info@baselland-tourismus.ch.
  • Airbnb rentals: If you list on Airbnb, guest tax is settled automatically through the platform.
  • Next steps: Once registered, we will contact you with further instructions.

Guest Pass+

All overnight visitors from outside the canton will receive the Guest Pass+, either in advance or upon arrival at their accommodation. The guest tax of CHF 3.50 per person, per night applies. With the Guest Pass+, guests can enjoy free and unlimited travel on public transport throughout the Basel region for the duration of their stay. The pass also provides discounted access in over 20 leisure attractions across the area — making it easier than ever to explore and enjoy everything the region has to offer.

Important information about the Guest Pass+

Who benefits from the Guest Pass+?

Generally, all individuals staying in commercial accommodation establishments in the Canton of Baselland who do not reside in the canton. These guests pay a guest tax of CHF 3.50 per night per person.

How long is the Guest Pass+ valid?

The Guest Pass+ is valid for the duration of the stay, including the arrival and departure days, for a maximum of 30 days per calendar year/accommodation.

How long is a guest liable for tax?

For individuals staying in the same accommodation for more than 30 days in a calendar year, the guest tax is no longer charged from the 31st day onward. Entitlement to the Guest Pass+ also expires when the guest tax obligation ceases.

I booked my accommodation via Airbnb. Do I still receive a Guest Pass+?

Yes, guests staying in Airbnb accommodations within the Canton of Baselland are also eligible for the Guest Pass+. Please contact your host directly for assistance.

Does the Guest Pass+ cover travel to and from EuroAirport Basel/Mulhouse?

Yes, the Guest Pass+ allows you to travel free of charge from EuroAirport Basel/Mulhouse to your accommodation on your arrival day and back to the airport on your departure day.

What happens in the event of rebooking or cancellations?

The validity of the Guest Pass+ automatically expires in the case of cancellations. For rebooking, the guest must obtain a new printed or downloaded version of the Guest Pass+.

In which zones can I use public transport for free with the Guest Pass+?

With the Guest Pass+, you can simply hop on the train, bus and tram and use public transport in the Basel region free of charge and without restriction for the duration of your stay (arrival & departure included/max. 30 days). The pass is valid for 2nd-class travel on all transport services within the TNW (Tariff Association Northwestern Switzerland) network. You can find a network map HERE.

Can I use public transport free of charge for my journey?

Yes, your accommodation will be happy to send you the Guest Pass+ in advance via email.

Do children under 12 years old (not subject to the tax) receive the Guest Pass+?

Children accompanied by family members liable for guest tax receive the Guest Pass+ free of charge as a gesture of goodwill. 
However, in group accommodations (e.g., hostels or camps), children under 12 are not taxed and therefore do not receive a Guest Pass+.
